Description
Charlottesville Community Bikes is a non-profit bicycle shop that works with Virginia Organizing (VO) to promote environmentally-sound transportation, recycle bicycles, and make cycling accessible in Charlottesville, VA. Our shop is volunteer-based.
The Community Bike Shop emerged out of Charlottesville's Yellow Bike Program. The program, which lasted only a few weeks, entailed about 150 yellow bikes being placed throughout the city for anyone to use at their leisure. Unfortunately theft & damage of the bicycles required that the program be put on hold. The Community Bike Shop allows its patrons to invest energy into a bike that they can keep and offers them how to maintain bikes. Charlottesville Community Bikes also provides bicycle maintenance and safe cycling training. We hope to relaunch a formal youth mentoring program.
As a local non-profit organization, we rely strictly on funding from private individuals and organizations. Although we primarily work with recycled materials, we do spend money on things such as bicycles tubes. We encourage monetary donations from all that use the shop.
Check our website for weekly Community Bike Shop hours and special events like classes.
